Safety valve for pressurised storage container - overpressure releases plunger to rupture sealing diaphragm

The safety valve consists of a sealed diaphragm which is punctured if pressure in the container exceeds a given value and thus obviates any leaks at normal pressures. The diaphragm (25) is clamped peripherally between two parts (15, 16) of the valve body. It carries a hollow cylinder (28) which can slide axially against a spring (32). A plunger (42) is held normally compressing spring (50) by balls (55) the balls in turn being contained radially by the cylinder (28). Under overpressure conditions, the cylinder slides away from the plunger, thus releasing the balls and therefore the plunger. The spring (50) then fires the plunger at the diaphragm and ruptures it, releasing the pressure. The container is particularly for jet engines.
