The journals or magazines are stored as a vertical pile, with the top of the pile maintained at a constant height, so that the top journal can be removed by two grip plates moving across the top of the pile, with an electromechanical drive system operated in response to coin insertion. Pref. the pile is carried by a plate (2) secured to a carriage (3) which can move vertically along a pair of guide rails (4) with an endless chain drive (7) for the carriage movement. The grip plates are articulated to a reciprocating mechanism including a second carriage moving along two horizontal guide rails. Contacts for a control circuit are located in the path of movement of both carriages.
