The connecting rods are contained in a tube to give an effective but easily transportable short circuiter. Each rod passes through a hole in a short circuiting ring inside the tube, with contact pressure provided by a garter spring. The rod ends are provided with hooks each having a latch, operated by a cam bearing against a central post, to grip the cable. The central post may contain an optical or audio device to give warning of a live conductor. Rubber springs may be employed to return the rods into the tube after use and hold them in place.
