A knop of flamme yarn is produced by combing a synthetic fibrous shirred to produce regions of increased bulk to form knops. The fibres of the shirred have a shrinkage capability of at least 30%, and the knops are subsequently heated to 100-135 degrees C for a sufficient time to produce a dimensional contraction of about 30%. The yarn is strong, cheap to produce and easy to dye.
