The mechanism automatically takes up any lengthwise play in the bowden cable attached to a pivoting portion of the mechanism guiding the chain between different sprockets. It incorporates a variable-length connection (8) between one end of the cable sheath (20) and a fixed or movable part (7) of the guiding mechanism, and which trusts the sheath away from the part concerned. A locing device (12) secures the connection in the position which it occupier action of the spring (9) thrusting the sheath away when the pivoting portion (2) of the mechanism is in a position corresponding to minimum tension of the cable (1).
