A marine oil tanker which normally uses exhaust gases from the ship's engines to give an innert atmosphere inside the oil tanks when they are empty as a safety procedure, so that there is no danger of an explosionM includes an auxiliary system of introducing this inert gas, when the engines are not working. A set of gas bottles (2) is installed near the tanks (1) each bottle having its valve (12) connected to a pressure monitor (11) in the supply line (3) through which the inert gas is normally supplied. When this pressure falls, the valves (12) on the gas bottles are opened successively, to pass through a valve (4) into this supply line.
