An overheating prevention device for use in electrical cigar lighters, partic. as installed in motor vehicles, consists of a lug (15) soldered into a bore hole (16) in the shaft (5) of the heating element (6). The melting point of the solder is somewhat higher than the operating temperature of the cigar lighter, but below the possible overheating temperature, so that on overheating the solder joint (17) melts and the push-out spring (12) of the plug (2) effects a separation of the heating element (6) and the shaft (5) with a resultant breaking of the heat supplying electrical circuit (20, 21). The lug (15) may pressed into the solder joint (17) or have a screw cut in it to allow it to be screwed in.
