Starter for briefly stopped automobile engine - has starter turbine driven by air compressed by running engine

The engine may be restarted after a short stop such as at traffic lights. A compressed air tank is supplied from an air compressor which is engine driven. After stopping of the engine the compressed air is supplied from the air tank to a gear reducer which includes an expansion turbine, and a gear train. Further reduction gearing may be included as necessary. When the air starter is operated, a valve is opened and air admitted to the turbine which is disengaged from the engine, until the starter is up to speed. The engine allows the train to free wheel when the engine is running.
