Insect repellant compsn contg swellable trilaminar clay - and N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide or 2-ethyl-1,3-hexanediol

Insect repellant compositions contain a finely divided, swellable, trilaminar clay and an aqeous soln. of a repellant chosen from N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide and 2-ethyl-1,3-hexanediol. The ratio of active cpd. : clay is 7-1:1 (pref. 5-2:1) and the ratio of clay : water is 1:2-30) (pref. 1:2-5). Insect repellant composition suitable for application to human skin, and having long acting effect. The compositions are fluids or gels which are easily applied to the skin and are dry to the touch. After the aqeous medium evaporates they leave a coating of clay lamella having texture and fraction properties like talc and remain active for long periods. They may easily be removed by washing when desired. Suitable clays are montmorillonites, natural or synthetic hectorites and saponite which contain various cations such as Na, K, Ca or Mg. The Na clays are preferred because of their high swelling in water.
