Rapid replacement of work rolls in rolling mills - using pre-stressed elastomers to keep rolls separate, and prevent damage to bearings

Device for the rapid replacement of the work rolls in roll-stands where, during both dismantling and assembly, the cambered surfaces of the rolls are kept apart, the rolls being supported by the chocks and support plugs which slide in holes in the chocks and can be pre-stressed. The plugs slide in the lower chocks and enter holes in the upper chocks, the holes providing play at least in one direction parallel to the axes of the rolls and, at least in the upper chock, a thrust surface is provided in one hole against which the top surface of the plug rests, the thrust surface being pre-stressed so it exerts a force in opposition to that provided by the pre-stressed plug; a centering device is also provided.
