Filling a hollow structure with close packed hollow bodies involves introducing the bodies in a shape which is not close packing and subsequently deforming the bodies to generate close packed profiles viz by evacuating the structure to dilate and distort the bodies. Esp. for filling and reinforcing structures such as aircraft wings, insulated containers honeycomb-cored panels, buoyancy vessels, etc. Close packed cores offer optimum strength/weight ratios, do not allow the cavity to be flooded if the surrounding structure is punctured. Dodecahedral body is better than a cube for following curved surfaces. Spheres are relatively easy to move prior to filling the cavity.
