A mat is suspended over the side of the swimming bath and partly immersed. On the inward facing surface of this mat are vertical lengths of U shaped channel parallel to each other and spaced at intervals. The open end of each channel faces the mat and each channel contains a number of piezo-electric pressure transducers embedded in an epoxy resin, this resin also fixing the channels to the mat. Between the channels and the side of the swimming bath is another sheet of material acting as a cushion. A signal is generated by local deformation of the mat.
