The coded symbols are of the type which may be read both by machine and by the human eye, and the two type carriers are positioned on either side of the path taken by the cheque when it is fed through the machine. The letters may be in magnetic ink, and are shaped somewhat like ordinary letters of the alphabet and symbols representing numerals may be shaped somewhat like ordinary numerals, but the shapes are modified to embody the machine readable code.
