Blood glucose levels in a patient are determined after oral administration of an aq. maltose soln. By taking blood samples at various intervals after administration of the maltose, and analysing the glucose content of the samples in order to determine the glucose level-time relationship, the patient's tolerance to sugar may be determined. Method is used for diagnosis of diabetes. In prior art, tolerance to sugar is usually determined after administration of glucose. By replacing this with maltose a similar accuracy is obtained but side effects (nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, etc.) are eliminated.
