The machine allows loading and unloading of palletised loads at a constant level, these loads being transferred to or withdrawn from several different levels. Constant level is maintained by means of tension springs (13) under the load. During the progressive loading or unloading operations the load support (1) bears against one of several stops, selected to give the required level. The interval between the stops can be the same as taht between the adjacent load shelves etc. After each loading or unloading operation, transfer of the load support to the next level to be served can be affected by a double-acting ram (7) whose piston rod is fixed to the support, a brake valve baing provided in the hydraulic circuit supplying the ram.
