Telescopic wick for big decorative candle - uses concentric bands of asbestos, metal strip and capillary mesh

A telescopic wick for a wax candle is made up of a central thread of asbestos around which are wound concentric bands of (a) asbestos material, (b) a non-flammable strip and (c) an open, e.g. woven, mesh material, the three bands being arranged to form a cylinder or spiral which is axially telescopic and has the central asbestos thread sticking out at the top. Pref. the asbestos band is woven asbestos or asbestos card, the non-flammable stip is aluminum or fire-proofed card or linen and the mesh material band is metal wire mesh or woven glass fibre material. The bottom end of the central thread is pref. secured to the bottom end of the mesh material band and a point near the projecting end of the central thread is secured to the innermost band so that a pull on the thread will extend the wick.
