A pom-pom is formed by producing a support layer (2) formed by depositing a main support yarn (1) in a zig-zag configuration and then producing a decorative layer (4) whose edge overlaps the edge of the support layer (2). A decorative layer (4) may overlap one or both edges of the support layer (2) and the(or each)decorative layer (4) is formed by depositing a decorative yarn (3) in a zig-zag configuration. The overlapping edges of the support layer (2) and the or each decorative layer (4) may be sucured by a line of stitching (5). This assembly is then rolled into a cylinder ad a tying yarn tied tight around the support layer to compress it so that the yarns (3) of each decorative layer (4) fan out to form a hemisphericla pom-pom.
