Refractory material is produced from 65-96 wt.% (pref. 70-96 wt.%) of crude alumina (Al2O3 content =99%), 3-25 wt.% of a chrome-irone ore (iron chromite), and 1-10 wt.% (calculated as P2O5) of H3PO4 and/or aluminium phosphate. The mixt. may contain up to 10 wt.% of calcined alumina. The chrome-irone ore contains 35-50% Cr2O3, 15-35% FeO and 25-40% of oxides of Si, Mg, Ca, Al and/or other metals. The addition of H3PO4 and/or AlPO4 increases the strength and bulk density of the product and reduces its porosity.
