The guide is particularly for use when sign writing, having a component (4) extending for at least part of the height of the bristles of the brush, and with a fixing device detachably securing it (6) to the brush. The component can have two half-shells (4, 4a) at right angles to each other, the fixing device having an elastic component passing round the brush, typically an elastic strip of the same material as the half-shells, with a ball end fitting in a hook. The strip can consist of a series of lozenge-shaped geometrical figures. There can be a guide finger extending from the side of the half-shells.
