The unit has a rectangular casing (1) with sides (2) and an open top. Inside it is a large water reservoir (4) which has internal stiffening walls (5, 6) and connections (7, 8) to the flow and return pipes. Immediately above the reservoir is a horizontal flat collector plate (10) with an absorbent black upper surface. The enclosure is closed by a glass sheet (15) at the top of the case which leaves an air gap (16) between itself and the collector plate (10). Rods (12, 13) on the back of the collector plate project into the water reservoir and ter minate in radial wires (14) which increase the heat transfer.
