The system is particularly for use in vehicle braking, having a hydrostatic cushion against which a large area thruster acts, constituting the high force transmitter, while a small area thruster forms the low force transmitter. The cushion surfaces are formed by parts located against the thrusters and the wall of the body accommodating them. The clearance between the thrusters and the body is relatively large at points clear of the cushion so as to avoid thruster wear, and small near it so as to avoid leakage. There can be an annular shoulder separating the large and small clearance areas from each other on the thruster.
