The machine arranges in layers a series of similar items delivered at a constant rate by a conveyor, and into boxes or other containers. At right angles and symmetrical in relation to the end of the conveyor (1) is an intake surface (5), while parallel to the conveyor and reciprocating at right angles to it is a sorting plate (18), moving in alternate directions with each incoming item (S), so as to divert them to opposite sides of the conveyor centre line. The items are removed from the intake surface by a grab (60) with suction heads or other suitable devices, and thruster mechanisms (46, 48) move them horizontally and vertically in order to deliver them into the boxes (C).
