The piston and cylinder assembly (7) consists of two cylinder blocks (12) with a common piston. This piston has a central shaft projecting at right angles to the piston axis and forming a pivot for the assembly (7). The cylinder blocks (12) are joined by plates (17) carrying forks (18) provided with rods (19). The rods (19) connect with a similar assembly (7) on the other side of the toothed wheel (6). When fluid is supplied to the assembly (7) the cylinder blocks oscillate and simultaneously rotate. The rods (19) then impart a rotation to the wheel (6) which rotates through an angle equal to two pitches of the teeth (39) for each rotation of the assembly (7). A number of assemblies (7) are fitted around the wheel (6).
