An indication of the direction of Mecca from a given location is given on a compass in order that a Muslim may know the direction in which to turn for his daily prayers. A compass for indicating the direction of Mecca comprises a magnetised pointer (1) mounted on a pivot fixed inside a rectangular box (2) with a point (5) forming a pointer. The pointer rotates above a support scale (6) on which there are indicators (7, 8) giving the names of towns in which the person is frequently located. These are positioned on the support scale in the direction of magnetic north from that particular town. The point (5) of the box indicates the direction of Mecca.
