Durable packing process for potable or mineral water consists in subjecting the water, before packing to a preliminary treatment with pure ozone before enclosure in a leaf-proof package, some 2-5g of ozone are introduced per m3 of water and maintained in contact for 5-15 mins. in a special contact vessel. The treatment is generally sufficient to kill all germs. Excess of ozone is removed in a second recipient by agitation; after degassing it amounts to 0.5 mg per litre and the water is packed under aseptic conditions into synthetic recipients or bags. Any ozone gas released during filling forms a protecting cover and excludes air. The packages are heat-sealed. A long period of preservation is assured with the water in a perfect state as regards bacteria and taste without prejudice to the important constituents of the water. There is no danger of re-infection because a supplementary sterilisation is obtd. by the layer of ozone, liberated during filling, which forms in the package.
