For demonstrating the abnormal LP-X or type III lipoprotein, a developing solution containing heparin and Mg ions with or without NaCl is used; for selectively demonstrating lipoprotein type III and lipoproteins VLDL,LDL and HDL, the carrier medium is treated successively with different developing solutions, one containing heparin and MgCl 2 , the other dextran sulphate and CaCl 2 . Apparatus for carrying out the separation may comprise rectangular vessel 1 covered by lid 2, with Pt sheet or wire 3, 4 serving as cathode K and anode A which continue in the vessel inner side walls and bottom, the vessel being divided longitudinally into anode and cathode regions by upwardly extending fillets 5 upon which rests the gel plate 7 cast into U-shaped stencil 9 with its limbs 8 extending down into the buffer solution; a row of slits 10 on the cathode side serve for receiving liquid (e.g. human serum) to be examined.
