The apparatus may comprise separate compartments to retain liquid samples with a lid for each compartment, c.f. Fig. 2, and the compartments may contain a reaction medium, or may take the form of areas of indicator disposed on a plate, Fig. 6, or a plate uniformly covered with indicator, and a template defining open areas with which to cover the plate for sampling, Fig. 11. The indicator may be nutrient medium, may incorporate nutrient medium of may include a diagnostic reagent for visible reaction with the entities.
