1443242 Carbon microspheres; microballoons SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 22 Oct 1973 [23 Oct 1972] 49068/73 Heading C1A Carbon microspheres are obtained by carbonizing a polymer microparticle which has been reacted with sulphuric acid or chlorosulphonic acid, the polymer (a) having the unit general formula wherein RSP1/SP is a hydrogen atom, an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl group, an optionally substituted hydrocarbyloxy group, a halogen atom, a cyano group, a hydroxy group, a group -OCORSP2/SP or -COORSP2/SP where RSP2/SP is a hydrogen atom or an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl group, (b) having the unit general formula wherein RSP3/SP and RSP4/SP are each independently an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl group an optionally substituted hydrocarbyloxy group, a halogen atom, a cyano group, a group of formula wherein RSP5/SP is a hydrogen atom or an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl group; (c) having the unit general formula wherein RSP6/SP is a hydrogen atom, an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl group, a halogen atom, a cyano group, a group of formula -OCORSP7/SP of formula -OCORSP7/SP or -COORSP7/SP wherein RSP7/SP is a hydrogen atom or an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl group; or is a copolymer containing as its repeating units two or more of the units above; or is a polyester, polyamide, polyurethane, polyalkylene ether, poly- (substituted alkylene ether), polyphenylene oxide, polymerized formaldehyde, polybisphenol A, unsaturated polyester, or a pitch obtained in the purification of petroleum or the carbonization of coal. The reaction is carried out at a temperature between the melting or softening point of the micro-particle and - 30‹ C. so that the interior of the micro-particle remains unreacted with the acid in cases where a microballoon is to be produced. Numerous polymers are listed in the Specification.
