The strip may receive magneticallyencoded data, in which case the device includes a magnetic reading head and a magnetic writing head. Alternatively, the device may comprise photo-electric sensing elements for optically reading data from the strip, dust covers or cleaning devices for the elements being provided. The linear movement is imparted to the device by a rack and pinion arrangement.
