A bleaching compsn. contains H2O2 (or an H2O2-releasing cpd. (I)) and an activating amt. of an acryl nitrile of formula ACN (II) (where A is (substd.) aroyl, cinnamoyl or the residue of a heterocylci carboxylic acid halide. The compsn. is used for bleaching fabrics, ground wood pulp and for treating (swimming pool) water. Besides being more effective at low temps. (i.e. ca. 70 degrees F), the compsn. does not cause fading of fabrics dyed with many classes of dye (e.g. cotton fabrics dyed with Vat Blue 6). They are safer/easir to handle than liq. bleaches.
