Adsorbent compsns. comprise (a)a polymeric or monomeric, mono- or polyfunctional prim., sec or tert. amine or other nucleophilic N cpd. with a free, functional N gp., good nucleophilic properties a high concn. of nucleophilic gps. and no gps. which can impair the adsorption or retention of gaseous adsorbates, and (b) a finely divided substrate contg. at least 5 wt. % porous, activated Al2O3 of 4-20 mesh particle size and having a surface area of at least 50 m2/g. The amt. of (a) employed is 0.1-25, pref. 1-20 and partic. 2-10 wt. % on wt. of (a)+(b). Used to remove atmospheric contamination, partic. radioactive substances and especially radioactive I2 present in minute amts. Adsorbents such as KI-impregnated coconut charcoal effective at high concns. are unsatisfactory at very low concns. of contaminant partic. radioactive I cpds., partic. CH3I, and have a greater adsorbent capacity than all known prods. Gamma Al2O3 was treated with excess dimethylaminopropylamine for 11 h. After decantation of excess amine, the impregnated Al2O3 was placed in a vacuum oven for 16 hr to remove any further free amine.
