The tape drive mechanism for a cassette player uses a DC motor with a low moment of inertia. This directly drives the capstan shaft. An electronic switch is used to select the direction of rotation of the DC motor, which is directly connected to the shaft of the take-up spool via a hysteresis coupling (10) and a corresponding reduction mechanism. The hysteresis coupling (10) has a polarised rotor (11) which is rigidly fixed to the shaft (12) of the take-up spool and cooperates with a hysteresis band, with the housing of the hysteresis coupling (10).
