1521596 Treating aquatic animals with medicinal agents WILDLIFE VACCINES INC 1 Oct 1976 [3 Oct 1975] 40759/76 Heading A5B Water-living animals (e.g. fish) are treated to administer a health and/or welfare enhancing agent such as a chemotherapeutant or a vaccine, by immersing them in an aqueous solution which is hyperosmotic relative to their body fluids, and then immersing them in an aqueous medium containing the said agent for long enough (e.g. 2-5 minutes) for an effective amount of said agent to be absorbed by the animal. Typical medicaments are vaccines e.g. inactivated Infections haematopoietic virus, Vibrio anguillarum bacterin, Aeromonas salmonicida bacterin and Enteric Redmouth bacterin; antimycotic agents, parasiticides, anthelmintics and antibiotics; and bovine serium albumin. The hyperosmotic solution may comprise sodium or potassium chloride and/or urea, together with other salts and buffering agents and dextrose. A suitable tonicity for the solution is 1200 mOsm of solute, the fish being immersed therein for 30 seconds to 3 minutes.
