Novel 5,5,7,7-tetramethylfuro[3,4-e]as-triazine-4-oxides of the formula I IMAGE in which R1 and R2 are identical or different and in each case denote H, F, Cl, (C1-C4)alkyl or straight-chain alkoxy, amino, NO2 or CF3 and, depending on the meanings, can assume various positions on the phenyl ring, are prepared by reaction of a compound of the formula II IMAGE with appropriate compounds of the formula III IMAGE in which R3 denotes methyl or ethyl. An NO2 group can be introduced into the phenyl ring after ring closure by nitration. The compounds particularly have a sleep-inducing and a slight tranquillising action.
