A manually actuated card punch unit is usef for individual punching of holes in a data card. It incorporates a facility to avoid accumulation of waste material under the worktable that can result in faulty operation. A top cover (20) has a front opening that permits finger access to a stack of blank cards (26) at the rear of the machine. A card is pulled forward under a guide (35) and onto a serrated roller (50) and finally onto the punching platform (60). A top cover (8) has a pattern of guides relating to card rows and columns and a lower plate provides tool guidance.
