Image intensifier of the proximity focus type, where the chances of the conducting phosphorous layer on the anode aperture disintegrating is practically eliminated. The tube consists of a cathode aperture (1), and anode aperture (6) linked by an airtight wall (9) using metallic sealing rings (7, 8). The cathode aperture is covered with a layer of phosphorous (4), and the phosphor layer is coated with a conducting layer made from a very thin aluminium foil (3), which is connected to the ring. A transparent conducting layer (5) is applied between the phosphorous layer and the anode aperture. The potential on the transparent anode layer is high enough to produce forces which are high enough to compensate for the forces produced between the anode and cathode sides due to the potential difference.
