A water-dilutable compsn. contains (A) 10-90 (40-80) wt. % of a water-dilutable polyether polyol resin contg. only C, H, O and opt. halogen, with mol. wt. 250-2000, contg. is not 2 alcoholic OH groups, with 80-20 wt.% of a hydrophobic fraction which is (partly) aromatic or cycloaliphatic, and 20-80% of a hydrophilic fraction contg. -(CH2CH2O)- units, and (B) 90-10 wt.% of a compatible aminoplast crosslinking agent of mol. wt. is not 1000. The mixt. is a coating compsn. It can be applied, e.g. by spraying onto phosphated steel. Other substrates include, wood, plastics, textiles, paper and glass. The compsn. can be used without a solvent. It may contain 70-90% solids, compared with 40-50% solids for water-based acrylic or polyester coatings. Addn. of an amine or co-solvent to obt. water-solubility or dispersibility is not needed. Flash-off before baking is unnecessary. The coatings are hard, flexible and resistant; coatings 0.076-0.127 mm thick can be obtd. without blistering. If a solvent is used, a high concn. of solids is possible.
