In the fabrication of fibre panels by a wet technique in a hot press by mechanical dehydration of a still wet fibre layer, and once the max. pressure has been reached, by maintaining the layer briefly at this pressure for further compressin, then by evapg. additional moisture by lowering the pressure, (a) the pressure is lowered using evapn. to ca. 50% of the max. pressure and at this pressure ev proceeds to a residual moisture of 8-10% and (b) thereafter the pressure is decreased relatively slowly almost to zero the compressed panel keeping the same density and thickness with a residual moisture content of 6-8%. Enables the conditioning of the fibre panels to an equilibium moisture conent of 6-8% to be achieved directly during mfre. without the need for the final conditioning step normally necessary. The overall compression time can also be shortened.
