Title cpds. are of formula (I): (where X is O or S; R is phenyl or benzoyl opt. substd. by halogen, 1-6C alkyl or alkoxy, NO2, NH2 or sulphonylamino; each R1 is H, halogen, OH, 1-6 C alkyl or alkoxy, NO2 or NH2; R2 is H or halogen; and n = 0-15), and have anti-inflammatory, vasodilatory and blood-platelet aggregation inhibiting activity. (I) are pref. prepd. by reacting the corresp. 4,5,6,7-tetrahydrofuro- or thieno 3,2-c -pyridine with Hal(CHR1)nR to form a cpd. (II): which is then hydrogenated, pref. with an alkali metal borohydride. (II) have antiarrhythmic activity.
