1288172 Continuous casting PROLIZENZ AG 6 May 1971 [8 May 1970] 13505/71 Heading B3F In a continuous strip casting machine in which two circulating endless series 10, 11 of mould parts 12, 13 co-operate to form a mould, a pair of electrically-insulated contact wires 23 (with uninsulated tips) are clamped between two successive mould parts and casting is started by permitting a flow of melt into the mould until the wires are short circuited and emit a signal, e.g. from a lamp 25, and then setting the mould in motion. The mould parts 12, 13 are preheated and sprayed with a graphite coating. A tundish stopper 18 is removed to start flow through a spout 19. The melt reaches the contact wires 23 (at an experimentally-determined location) in the stationary mould and the space between the wires and a dummy bar 20 is filled while the mould parts accelerate to speed. The mould cavity may be horizontal, inclined or vertical. The process may be maintained by automatic regulation of the level in the tundish 17 and the machine may be tilted after starting as described in co-pending Specification 26973/71. The mould blocks are sprayed for cooling, in a region of reduced air pressure, as described in Specification 1,186,466, an exhauster and pump being switched on when the mould is set in motion.
