ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA method and apparatus for the continuous hightemperature treatment of sulfur-containing carbonaceousparticles in an electrethermally heated fluidized bed isdisclosed. In one aspect of the invention, a fiuidizingstream is passed through carbonaceous particles introducedinto a fluidizing zone at a velocity sufficient to fluidizesaid carbonaceous particles. The carbonaceous particles areheated in a fluidized state, and controllably fed into anddischarged from the fluidizing zone at a rate sufficient toassure that the sulfur content of the particles are reducedbelow 0.5%. In another aspect of the invention, at least aportion of the carbonaceous material is transformed from arelatively amorphous molecular state, into a graphite crystal-line state.
