1378963 Stabilizing polymers DART INDUSTRIES Inc 27 March 1972 [2 April 1971 20 July 1971] 14186/72 Heading C3P Plastics materials are stabilized against thermal oxidative degradation by incorporating therein 0À01 to 10 weight per cent of a polymeric compound having on average at least three repeating units of formulµ where R and RSP1/SP are hydrogen or alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl groups of up to 24 carbon atoms and n is 1 or 2; together with 0À01 to 5 weight per cent of a metal deactivator which is an acid hydrazide of formula (i) R 1 CONHNR 2 R 3 where R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are alkyl, cycloalkyl, substituted alkyl or substituted cycloalkyl of up to 20 carbon atoms, an aryl or substituted aryl group or a heterocyclic or substituted heterocyclic group, and R 2 and R 3 may also be hydrogen, or of formula (ii) where R 5 is R 1 , H 2 NNHCO- or R 4 is hydrogen, OH, alkyl or alkoxy, and X is hydrogen or halogen. The plastics material may be a polymer of an olefin, styrene, vinyl or vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, vinyl alcohol, acrylic or methacrylic acids, esters or nitriles, or of maleic, fumaric or itaconic esters. The polymeric compound may be an aldehyde or acetylene novolac of a phenol or alkyl phenol, or condensate thereof with a sulphur chloride. Many suitable plastics materials, polymeric compounds and metal deactivators are listed and examples describe compositions comprising propylene/ethylene copolymers, chelating agents such as N-salicylidene-NSP1/SP-salicyl hydrazide or N,NSP1/SP-dibenzal-(oxalyl dihydrazide) and (1) t.-butylphenol/acetylene, (2) resorcinol/isobutyraldehyde, (3) t.-butylphenol/formaldehyde, (4) t.-butylphenol/acetaldehyde, (5 and 10-29) t.-butylphenol/t.-octylphenol/acetaldehyde, (6) t.-amylphenol/formaldehyde, (7) t.-butylphenol/t.-amylphenol/formaldehyde, (8) laurylphenol/formaldehyde, (9) t.-octylphenol/ formaldehyde, (30) t.-octylphenol/acetaldehyde, (31) dipentene/phenol/formaldehyde and (32) t.-octylphenol/butyraldehyde resins, and (33) alkylphenol sulphide resin.
