A foundation pit (1) is provisionally excavated and a sealing layer (2), expediently a plastic mat, is introduced therein, one side of said mat provisionally projecting some way above the open foundation pit. After pouring in a layer (3) of ballast and sand, the tanks or oil tanks (4) are placed thereon. The tanks are then covered with a layer (5) of ballast and sand. Water is poured in on top of this until the water level (7) lies between the upper side of the tanks and the level (6) of the ballast and sand layer (5). The ballast and sand layer (5) is covered by means of that part of the plastic mat (2) projecting beyond the foundation-pit edge, and said plastic mat is sealed off at all joints. If one of the tanks then leaks, its contents, e.g. oil, since it is lighter than water, cannot escape; on the contrary, some of the water inside the sealing layer, which has been welded shut, penetrates into the tank. Lowering of the water level is shown in a water-level gauge pipe (10). Any escape of the contents from the tanks is thus avoided. IMAGE
