The friction members comprise fingers which are operated by cam surfaces 88 on sliding cams 79, 80 driven by a piston and cylinder arrangement 16. The pile is retained in a magazine 36 in which the pile is spring-urged against restraining lugs, the spring- urged means being shaped to provide the labels with a slightly curved surface. Two such piles may be operated on simultaneously, the piles facing one another (Fig. 1, not shown). A pneumatic conveyer (94, Fig. 3, not shown) removes the separated label.
