Cylinder head contains a unit comprising of a thin walled ante chamber (8) whose securing cover accommodates the spark plug (12) and fuel injector (7). A flame channel (13) opens into the main combustion chamber. A weak air fuel mixture is drawn into the main combustion chamber via a conventional valve. Fuel is injected into the ante chamber in a region of from 100 deg. crankshaft revolution before bdc during the induction stroke to 90 deg. before tdc compression stroke. The ante chamber does not take part in the gas exchange and the entire fuel injection remains in the ante chamber during the induction and compression strokes to mix and vapourise with the previous combustion residue.
