Thermally active treated surface wetted by a liquid, partic. in sodium-cooled nuclear reactors, is pre-treated on its wetted face in such a way that each transverse section has a zone with a chemically pre-treated and, more esp., nitrided or phosphided, surface. Eliminates or substantially reduces the superheating and subsequent explosive boiling which otherwise occurs on the surfaces e.g. of heat exchangers, fuel elements etc., wetted by the molten sodium coolant.
