Continuous separation of the liquid (filtrate) from a fibre suspension, e.g. a paper pulp, by the known technique of (a) using a filter element which is moved in a closed container in an endless path in which it delimits a filtrate chamber (I) completely filled with filtrate from a liquid-separating chamber (II) and a fibre-separating chamber (III), completely filled with fibre suspension and directly following (II) in the direction of motion of the filter element, (b) supplying the fibre suspension to (II) and setting it into motion in the direction of motion of the filter element, (c) discharging the filtrate from (I) in a quantity per unit time such that a pressure is produced adapted to the permeability of the filter element and reduced relative to that in (II) and such that filtrate is caused to flow through the filter element and to produce a concentration of fibres along and on the surface of the element facing (II) with the improvement that (d) the fibre suspension is caused to flow at such a high rate from (II) into (III) that a reduced pressure relative to that in (I) is produced along the surface of the filter element facing (III). High liquid separating capacity per unit area of filter, which permits the use of smaller equipment requiring less floor space; simple construction and assembly and hence lower plant cost and greater operational reliability; adaptable for use with paper pulps of differing consistency and ewatering properties: protection of the suspension and filtrate from contact with the air.
