The bromine may be introduced as free bromine, hydrobromic acid, mono- or dibromosuccinic acid or anhydride or mono- or dibrominated polyolefin, preferably after 25 to 70 % of the olefin polymer has reacted. The olefin polymer may be a homopolymer, copolymer of two or more olefins, or copolymer of an olefin with a diene, triene or vinyl aromatic compound. Examples describe alkenyl succinic anhydrides prepared by reacting polyisobutylene with maleic anhydride in the presence of (3) hydrogen bromide, (4) hydrobrominated polyisobutylene, (5) dibromosuccinic anhydride, (6 to 11) polyisobutylene dibromide and (12 to 14) bromine.
