1403329 Alkylating aromatic hydrocarbons MOBIL OIL CORP 14 March 1973 [28 April 1972 12 May 1972] 12260/73 Heading C5E Aromatic hydrocarbons are alkylated in the vapour phase with an alkylating agent using a ZSMÀ5 or ZSMÀ12 type zeolite catalyst (defined by X-ray diffraction pattern) under conditions including a reactor inlet temperature of 600- 900‹ F., reactor pressure between atmospheric and 3000 p.s.i.g. a mole ratio of aromatic feed : alkylating agent of 1 : 1 to 20 : 1 and 2-3000 WHSV. The alkylating agent may be an olefin, an alcohol or formaldehyde. The zeolite may be composited with an alumina binder. Examples describe the alkylation of benzene with ethylene; toluene with formaldehyde; toluene with methanol; benzene with methanol; benzene with propylene; toluene with propylene; and m-zylene with methanol.
