The pressure vessel of the reactor with all primary working fluid cooling system components is enclosed in a first sealed chamber communicating via a condenser assembly with a large buffer chamber filled initially with cold air. In the event of a burst vapour evolved from the leaking primary coolant passes through the condenser which has cooling agent injectors in a closed circuit, into the buffer chamber which has controlled venting of the resultant weakly radioactive air-vapour mixt.
